{"id":258,"date":"2017-10-05T21:19:04","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T03:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/?p=258"},"modified":"2017-10-25T22:55:56","modified_gmt":"2017-10-26T04:55:56","slug":"teaching-life-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/teaching-life-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Landing the Helicopter- Teaching Life Skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can all agree that our end goal is a happy, productive, independent adult who knows how to contribute to society. \u00a0The question is how do we get from Point A, infant in arms, to Point B, this \u201cfunctioning\u201d adult? \u00a0It\u2019s strange to think of our preschooler as an adult, but sometimes stepping back and changing our perspective can help us \u201cland the helicopter\u201d of parenting as we begin teaching life skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/helicopter-186718_1920-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-286 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/helicopter-186718_1920-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"teaching life skills\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/helicopter-186718_1920-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/helicopter-186718_1920-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/helicopter-186718_1920-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/helicopter-186718_1920-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helicopter parenting refers to parents who \u201chover\u201d over their child, protecting them from any harm and solving all their problems. \u00a0It\u2019s instinctive for parents to protect their children, so striking the balance between protecting and allowing life\u2019s experiences to teach our child can be tricky. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professionals agree that failure to allow children the independence they need to learn life skills creates individuals with<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parents.com\/parenting\/better-parenting\/what-is-helicopter-parenting\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased anxiety, decreased self-worth, under-developed coping skills and a sense of entitlement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0Yikes! So what are some things we can do increase autonomy and a positive self-image in our children?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5 Tools for Teaching Life Skills<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>TEACH<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be stating the obvious, but sometimes our expectations are too high if we don\u2019t set children up for success. \u00a0Then, when they fail, we get a false sense of their capabilities. Before expecting a child to perform a task, model it for her. \u00a0The Boy Scouts of America trains its leaders in the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scouting.org\/filestore\/outdoorethicsguide\/pdf\/TeachingEdgeMethod.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching EDGE Method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>E<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ducate- Explain the \u201cwhy\u2019s.\u201d We put the plates facing the middle of the dishwasher and the cups upside down because the water sprayer spins and will clean them better there. \u00a0We feed the dog because, just like humans, he needs food for energy to move, and so his tummy doesn\u2019t feel hungry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>D<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emonstrate- We show them where the dishes are placed in the dishwasher and how to fill the dog bowls with the right amount of food and water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>G<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uide- Stand by them as they try it themselves, ready to make gentle corrections as needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>E<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nable- Allow them to do it autonomously, watching from a distance, and again making gentle corrections only when necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>TRUST<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust your child\u2019s capabilities. \u00a0I\u2019m not talking about trusting your preschooler with your grandmother\u2019s china. \u00a0But become familiar with what is<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> age-appropriate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your child and trust him to start trying new things. \u00a0This website offers ideas of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyeducation.com\/life\/individuality\/i-did-it-all-myself-age-age-guide-teaching-your-child-life-skills-0?slide=1\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age-appropriate life skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for all different ages. \u00a0It\u2019s easy to forget to teach tying shoelaces and making a phone call in our world of velcro and text messaging. \u00a0They are capable, they just need the <\/span><b><i>practice<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>PATIENCE<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0609-1-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-288\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0609-1-1-684x1024.jpg\" alt=\"teaching life skills\" width=\"525\" height=\"786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0609-1-1-684x1024.jpg 684w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0609-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0609-1-1-768x1150.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0609-1-1.jpg 1267w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Akin to trust is patience. And some patience. And then some more patience. \u00a0Waiting for a three-year-old to put his shoes on could tip your stress levels over breaking point as you\u2019re trying to hurry out the door. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow your preschooler <\/span><b><i>ample time<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn new skills in a stress-free environment. \u00a0And on those stressful, have-to-get-out-the-door days, it\u2019s okay to rotate which things your child will be autonomous on for that particular day. \u00a0Just make sure you are giving them enough opportunities to really learn the skills. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>OBSERVE<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gandhi taught, \u201cSatisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment; full effort is full victory.\u201d If our child doesn\u2019t learn to get that coat zipper up the first, second, or fifteenth time, lovingly encourage him to keep trying. \u00a0Allow the struggle. Sometimes the hardest part is keeping our hands to ourselves when we yearn to reach out and \u201cfix\u201d the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>CELEBRATE<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a new skill is achieved, help them recognize their success and celebrate it!
