\u00a0And when it is time for us to send them on their way, we want them to have the skills they need to confidently tackle the issues they face. \u00a0Here are some of our thoughts on how to help children solve problems, and some ideas you can try at home as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Problems Come In All Shapes and Sizes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every day of life contains a series of &#8220;problems&#8221; to be solved. \u00a0We are constantly finding solutions for lost keys, stacks of mail, an empty milk carton, a sick child, a low gas tank, a low checking account, an upset employer, traffic&#8230;the heart rate goes up just thinking about it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our adult problems can feel overwhelming at times. \u00a0Although our preschooler&#8217;s problems may look simple and obvious to us, it&#8217;s important for us to recognize that their problems may feel just as overwhelming to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171009_114734.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-321\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171009_114734-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"solve problems\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171009_114734-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171009_114734-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171009_114734-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171009_114734.jpg 1066w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not all problems are stressful. \u00a0Learning a new skill, creating something new, and facing new challenges also present the opportunity to solve problems. \u00a0For a preschooler, the process of learning how to come up with a solution, like building this fence for the barn animals, is challenging and, most often, fun!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Teach Them How to Express Their Feelings<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171006_111343.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-314\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171006_111343-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"solve problems\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171006_111343-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171006_111343-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171006_111343.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings are one of those things preschoolers are learning how to manage. \u00a0Let&#8217;s be honest &#8211; \u00a0aren&#8217;t we all? \u00a0But there are healthy and unhealthy ways to express feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can start by modeling healthy expression of feelings as caregivers. \u00a0Then, another tool to help you teach your preschooler are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.communicationandconflict.com\/i-statements.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I statements.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Using &#8220;I statements&#8221; not only helps your child identify what they are feeling, it is a healthy way to communicate those feelings to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel angry when&#8230;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel sad when&#8230;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think a good solution would be&#8230;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using &#8220;I statements&#8221; avoids pointing blame on others and acknowledges that what we are saying is our own thoughts and opinions and not fact. Although, you may want to be prepared for a preschooler to argue their thoughts are, indeed, fact!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ask the Right Questions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions are a fabulous tool for coming to solutions! \u00a0We can ask questions to help solve problems of discovery, as well as leading the thought process through a social disagreement or hurt feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20170918_121749.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-316\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20170918_121749-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"solve problems\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20170918_121749-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20170918_121749-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20170918_121749.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>What will happen if?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A great question for discovery! \u00a0While playing, have children try different variables. \u00a0What happens if I stack this here? \u00a0What happens if we add this water to the sand? \u00a0What happens if we drop this leaf and feather at the same time?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Is there another way you can do it?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/browse\/article.jsp?id=3746479\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially three-year-olds can get fixated on one right solution.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0By asking your child if there is another way, he or she can step back and brainstorm the possibilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>How did that make you feel?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Whenever we have a social conflict arise at<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/index.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UDA Creative Arts Preschool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first thing we ask is how the situation made the child feel. \u00a0Identifying their feelings helps them recognize their emotions and identify the desire to avoid this same situation in the future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>How do you think they feel?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What a wonderful opportunity for children to learn how to empathize and have compassion!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>How can we make this a win-win situation?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Learning how to compromise is necessary for healthy relationships in life. \u00a0Some<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/article\/562082-compromise-activities-for-children\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideas for making compromises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are turn-taking, sharing, and &#8220;let&#8217;s make a deal&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Their Solution May Look Different Than Yours<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171005_091930.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-317\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171005_091930-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"solve problems\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171005_091930-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171005_091930-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171005_091930.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, your child decided the colander was a better helmet than the one in the dress-ups. \u00a0No biggie! \u00a0Usually your solution to a problem is going to look different than your child&#8217;s. \u00a0Just like math, there is more than one way to find the solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be times when the sandals for sledding are just not going to cut it; however, in order to build confidence in problem solving, make sure you allow your child to use their solution as often as possible. \u00a0If they do march out in the sandals, present the problem of being cold and see if they can come up with a new solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, this is a process. \u00a0Your two-year-old will probably not be able to work as a team to create a &#8220;turn rotation,&#8221; while your four-year-old posse may have it all drawn out on paper for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Use Literature to Model<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_1001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-318\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_1001-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"solve problem\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_1001-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_1001-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_1001-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Do You Do With a Problem?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Kobi Yamada and Mae Besom is a darling book about tackling our problems. \u00a0We highly recommend this book as a tool to discuss how to deal with problems, and how they can be a positive thing in our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Literature is a great way to discuss problem solving with your child. \u00a0Most books have some kind of a dilemma. \u00a0Ask your children, (You guessed it!), more questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the character&#8217;s problem?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you think that character feels? \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you think they are going to solve the problem? \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would you do?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It thrills us to watch our sweet preschoolers leave our four-year-old program not coming to teachers to solve their problems, but hearing them say things like, &#8220;I know!
