{"id":402,"date":"2017-11-13T14:10:56","date_gmt":"2017-11-13T21:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/?p=402"},"modified":"2017-11-13T14:10:56","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T21:10:56","slug":"4-math-activities-for-early-math-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/4-math-activities-for-early-math-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Fun Math Activities for Early Math Skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nctm.org\/Standards-and-Positions\/Position-Statements\/Mathematics-in-Early-Childhood-Learning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that children who have exposure to mathematical experiences early on demonstrate a higher confidence in their ability to do math. \u00a0Furthermore, these children are more likely to demonstrate characteristics, like curiosity and creativity, imaginativeness and inventiveness, persistence and flexibility. \u00a0That\u2019s why at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UDA Creative Arts Preschool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we integrate math throughout our curriculum to provide plenty of experience for the development of early math skills. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you\u2019re one of those people who drudged your way through those high school math classes, never fear! \u00a0Your child\u2019s early exposure to math doesn\u2019t have to be structured or curricular. \u00a0In fact, teaching young children math skills is much easier than you think! \u00a0Even those of us who hate math, enjoy math.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what we mean:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Math is Play!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naeyc.org\/tyc\/article\/making-math-meaningful\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that rather than rote memorization of facts or doing worksheets, children will have a better understanding of math if they have open-ended <a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/why-your-child-needs-play-based-learning\/\">play<\/a> exploration. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171101_090519.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-411\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171101_090519-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"early math skills\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171101_090519-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171101_090519-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171101_090519.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the numbers become much more concrete when we&#8217;re adding legs and eyes to a bug, or body sections to our caterpillar, rather than 1+1 on a piece of paper. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Make Connections-<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although math at an early age should be play, children still need to be guided to see the connections.\u00a0 You can help your preschooler expand their thinking by taking their play a step further to see the mathematical relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0604-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-408\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0604-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"early math skills\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0604-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0604-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0604-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These kiddos are having a great time on the teeter-totter, but we can take this play a step further by asking who is heavier?\u00a0 Who is up and who is down?\u00a0 What happens if we fit two children on one side?\u00a0 They are learning to measure weight.<\/p>\n<p>Who knew parent = math teacher?\u00a0 But like we said, it&#8217;s much easier than you think.\u00a0 Here are four fun ways you can incorporate a little more math in your preschooler&#8217;s life:<\/p>\n<h2>1 &#8211; Games<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4415.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-415\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4415-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"early math skills\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4415-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4415-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4415-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Games are a wonderful way to apply early math skills!\u00a0 Whether your child is counting how many squares they need to move, or adding the dots on the dice, it doesn&#8217;t take a sleuth to see their little brain at work.\u00a0 Here are a few of our favorites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yahtzee &#8211; Awesome for numbers and operations.\u00a0 Guide them as they group the dice together and add them together.<\/li>\n<li>Board games like Sorry!, Chutes and Ladders, and Candy Land &#8211; Great to help children count squares both forward and backward, working on adding and subtracting.<\/li>\n<li>Card games like Go Fish! &#8211; Help with grouping.<\/li>\n<li>Tenzi &#8211; You can start out following the rules, but how much more fun to make up your own!\u00a0 The sky is the limit with the creativity you can do with this dice game.<\/li>\n<li>Blokus &#8211; Measurements<\/h2>\n<p>Everything around us is measured: the weight of our breakfast cereal, our time, the length of our haircut.\u00a0 Children begin to see these measurements and numbers all around them and you can begin having daily conversations about what all these measurements mean.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4543.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-416\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4543-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"early math skills\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4543-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4543-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4543.jpg 1224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But not everything needs to be measured by the &#8220;standard&#8221;.\u00a0 How many pumpkins high are you?\u00a0 Can you count how many sidewalk squares to the park?\u00a0 How many Legos tall is this pencil?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171026_090759.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-417\" src=\"http:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171026_090759-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"early math skills\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171026_090759-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171026_090759-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/preschool.utahdanceartists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171026_090759.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, of course, cooking is a wonderful way to incorporate measurements in your day to day conversations.\u00a0 Have your kitchen helper count how many cups of flour and measure out a tsp of vanilla.\u00a0 Or use the scale at the store to measure the weight of your produce.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Show your preschooler how to use a sewing measuring tape.\u00a0 Let them measure things around the house.\u00a0(Sewing measuring tapes have a softer edge than the construction ones and will prevent cuts.)<\/li>\n<li>Let them use a stop watch to time how fast they can get ready for bed, put their shoes on, make their bed, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>4 &#8211;
